Lemmy needs diversity

1. Lemmy

I've been trying to use Lemmy more and more to replace Reddit. I like the UI a lot and I've subbed to a ton of varied subs. However, 99% of my daily Lemmy feed still consists of extreme left-wing political content which, while I agree with some, doesn't make it a really great experience for exploring different things and sometimes, let's be honest, just finding fun things.

I get it: Using Lemmy in of itself is actually pretty much a political act right now. It's just as subversive an act online as was using Linux back in the 90s. Very few people did it apart from extreme ideologues. I know because I tended to be one of them. The chances of finding another one in a crowd were, at the start, fairly minuscule. It's the same feeling I get with Lemmy. Most people will never have heard of it because it's "hard to figure out federation".

I'd like to pause here and state that anyone who says this is either a complete idiot, or has never taken the minute or so to try to learn about it. Is it hard to "figure out" Email? No.

Apps seem to have made most people just a whole lot more ignorant and stupid overall. Back in the 90s and early 2000s, your average Joe and even grandmother was figuring out how to get online with a lot more complications than what Lemmy or Mastodon present people with today.

But I digress.

Lemmy needs to expand a little. It needs to have some more fun type of content. Take Reddit, for instance. I'm subbed to the Seinfeld subreddit. It's a blast. It's a place where literally nothing is taken seriously (just like the show). If you're a fan, you definitely want to check it out.

I don't need tons of eye candy to like Lemmy, or reams of mindless blather, but a little comedic relief wouldn't be such a bad thing. If all I see when I go there is people ranting about Trump and the U.S. and all the other political rants lumped in together, it's just going to end up being nothing but a rage-inducing or depressing experience. And while I agree with 95% of what everyone is ranting about, I don't want it to become my life - even if it actually pays for me to make it my life one day.

Now, I know stating all of this is easier said than done. If you recruit mostly ideologues to start your communities, that's what you're going to get for content. But perhaps Lemmy needs a bit of a social movement of its own to diversify the general content.

It's just a thought.

Either way, I'll keep using it. I believe in Lemmy and, like I said, I agree with tons of stuff I see posted. Heck, my blog has ranted about this stuff for a while (and my old ones as well). All I'm saying is that a little honey can be used on the side with the whopping amounts of vinegar served as the main course.
